2005-03-03 - 12:28 a.m. this has been one brutal fucking week- after tomorrow the worst of it's over: thurs 3/3
i went to a rally for this high school teacher (mr. obain) who came to the U.S. visitor's visa, was denied asylum, then missed a hearing (on accident he says) and was automatically ordered deported- he's been teaching for over 10 years- he is going to be deported- interestingly, he was imprisoned in Ivory Coast, Africa for advocating for labor unions and affiliating with the leftist party that eventually came to power- i counted over 225 high school students, plus parents, teachers, and a few other folks (maybe 20-30). it was a great rally- the youth who spoke were extremely articulate and impassioned- i don't know what kind of chance they have, the removal order's been postponed a few times already- he has only 4 days or so left- there seem to be 2 options 1) a homeland security chief chertoff can decide to let it go (a bunch of senators and whatnot sent him a letter urging this)- this seems unlikely (the white house is even less likely to intervene) or 2) a senator could introduce a bill, which doesn't look like it's going to happen. so it doesn't look so good except there is tons of publicity being generated- the today show or good morning america (i forget which) is going to be at their school tomorrow- so the media attention might do it- the boston media has been covering it extensively- also, they're trying to get Mass. Gov. Romney to use his connections to the white house to get a reprieve -- i look forward to the public interest law retreat this weekend (http://www.tourolaw.edu/alumni_and_development/events/cover_retreat_2005/index.asp) - and going to nyc of course- going to see lisa, bethany, stephen, probably tiffany and rosa, maybe marissa, anwar, lillian, amanda- most of my friends are female i guess- although i like to think my male friends are especially anti-masuclinity- anyways it's going to be a working vacation i have so much i have to do- but it'll be a good change of scenery, plus none of my friends there are on spring break so it wouldn't cut very much into spending time with them, just wandering-the-city time and perhaps checking out apartments in harlem for the summer time- although lisa's in school and her schedule seems pretty random- regardless, i look foward to kickin it in nyc and catching up on work- why is my diaryland becoming less a journal of ideas/articles/creative writing and more of just a journal-
